After finishing the internship of the Family Medicine specialty, I started working in one of the oldest areas of the city of Lisbon, with a list composed of a significant number of elderly patients, where chronic, degenerative and slowly evolving diseases predominate. At this stage, with the need of more regular, close and specialized follow-up of these patients, some of them in terminal phase, I felt that I could have responded better to the needs of my patients and their families, so that they had the slightest suffering. and the best quality and comfort in this final phase of their lives. Since my pre- and post-graduate Palliative Care training was almost non-existent, I tried to update myself in a self-taught way, which was obviously scarce. It was in this sense that I enthusiastically started this Master in Palliative Care challenge, in order to acquire new skills and improve the care provided to my patients and their families. In fact, the increasing prevalence of chronic pathology inherent to the aging of our population, demonstrates how important the philosophy of palliative care is to my daily clinical practice. The possibility of performing this practical internship in a Masters context, allowed me to acquire practical experience in providing palliative care, both in hospitalization with more complex patients, and in patients at home. I was able to use in practice the theoretical knowledge taught in the first year of this master's degree, and become more comfortable in the management of palliative patients. This report aims to demonstrate the achievement of the previously proposed objectives, explain the different activities performed, the difficulties and obstacles that arose along this route. In short, it intends to prove the acquisition of skills in the fields of care, training, management and research in the area of Palliative Care

Industrial parks perform territorial, economic and environmental functions. A suitable planning and management are key issues so that industrial parks can achieve these functions. In Portugal there are few studies regarding the number and the conditions provided by the industrial parks. In this article, we show the main conclusions of a study focusing on the firms’ location behaviour and on the conditions provided by a set of industrial parks located in the municipalities of Barcelos, Braga, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão, which form the network known as Quadrilátero Urbano. The study was based on a survey addressed to 79 entrepreneurs located in the industrial parks of these four municipalities. The study had the following objectives: to identify the origin of the firms and the reasons for choosing to be located in the industrial parks; to capture the entrepreneurs’ perception regarding the conditions provided by the parks; and to understand the future locative intentions of the entrepreneurs. The results show that most firms installed in the parks came from diffuse locations. Space availability was the most important factor affecting the relocation decision. The results also revealed a dominant favourable opinion concerning conditions provided by the parks and a general intention of not relocating to another area in the future.(undefined

This paper describes an agent-based model developed to simulate the impact that different planning policies may have in enhancing the attractiveness of the industrial estates located in a network of four municipalities located in the North of Portugal. The policies were simulated using three scenarios that can be distinguished by the municipal level of coordination they are implemented and by the type of action performed. In the model, enterprises are agents looking for a suitable location and the estates attractiveness is based on their level of facilities, amenities, accessibility and in the cost of soil. The coordinated qualification of the industrial estates is the most effective policy to strengthen their attractiveness. It was in this scenario that more industrial estates become attractive and more enterprises relocated. Results also indicate that the promotion of diffused and unqualified industrial estates is an inefficient policy to attract enterprises.Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (SFRH/BD/48567/2008 grant

This article presents the results of a study undertaken in the Quadrilátero Urbano, designation given to a network composed by the municipalities of Barcelos, Braga, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão, which aimed at assessing how entrepreneurs perceive the conditions offered by the industrial estates located in this territory. The survey is part of a broader planning study and was performed with the purpose of understand the locative behaviour of entrepreneurs. The goal was to perceive where the entrepreneurs were located before, to identify which reason(s) explained their relocation to an industrial estate and to understand their evaluation regarding the conditions offered by the industrial estates. Furthermore, the survey was also implemented to disclose the future locative intentions of the entrepreneurs. The results show that mostly of the enterprises initially had a diffuse location (outside an industrial estate), the entrepreneurs have a general favourable opinion of the conditions offered by the industrial estates, despite the low coverage in terms of facilities and amenities diagnosed. Only a few entrepreneurs intends to relocate to other spaces in the future

Magnetic sensors are mandatory in a broad range of applications nowadays, being the increasing interest on such sensors mainly driven by the growing demand of materials required by Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things concept. Optimized power consumption, reliability, flexibility, versatility, lightweight and low-temperature fabrication are some of the technological requirements in which the scientific community is focusing efforts. Aiming to positively respond to those challenges, this work reports magnetic proximity sensors based on magnetoelectric (ME) polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/Metglas composites and an excitation-printed coil. The proposed magnetic proximity sensor shows a maximum resonant ME coefficient (α) of 50.2 Vcm−1 Oe−1, an AC linear response (R2 = 0.997) and a maximum voltage output of 362 mV, which suggests suitability for proximity-sensing applications in the areas of aerospace, automotive, positioning, machine safety, recreation and advertising panels, among others. This research was funded by CT- Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia in the framework of the Strategic Funding UID/FIS/04650/2019 and under projects PTDC/EEI-SII/5582/2014, PTDC/BTM-MAT/28237/2017 and PTDC/EMD-EMD/28159/2017. Marked object recognition multitouch screen printed touchpad for interactive applications

    Get PDF
The market for interactive platforms is rapidly growing, and touchscreens have been incorporated in an increasing number of devices. Thus, the area of smart objects and devices is strongly increasing by adding interactive touch and multimedia content, leading to new uses and capabilities. In this work, a flexible screen printed sensor matrix is fabricated based on silver ink in a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. Diamond shaped capacitive electrodes coupled with conventional capacitive reading electronics enables fabrication of a highly functional capacitive touchpad, and also allows for the identification of marked objects. For the latter, the capacitive signatures are identified by intersecting points and distances between them. Thus, this work demonstrates the applicability of a low cost method using royalty-free geometries and technologies for the development of flexible multitouch touchpads for the implementation of interactive and object recognition applications.Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the framework of the Strategic Funding UID/FIS/04650/2013. Wide-range magnetoelectric response on hybrid polymer composites based on filler type and content

    Get PDF
Abstract: In order to obtain a wide-range magnetoelectric (ME) response on a ME nanocomposite that matches industry requirements, Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.92 (Terfenol-D)/CoFe2O4/P(VDF-TrFE) flexible films were produced by solvent casting technique and their morphologic, piezoelectric, magnetic and magnetoelectric properties investigated. The obtained composites revealed a high piezoelectric response (≈-18 pC.N-1) that is independent of the weight ratio between the fillers. In turn, the magnetic properties of the composites were influenced by the composite composition. It was found that the magnetization saturation values decreased with increasing CoFe2O4 content (from 18.5 to 13.3 emu.g-1) while the magnetization and coercive field values increased (from 3.7 to 5.5 emu.g-1 and from 355.7 to 1225.2 Oe, respectively) with increasing CoFe2O4 content. Additionally, those films showed a wide-range dual-peak ME response at room temperature with the ME coefficient increasing with weight content of Terfenol-D, from 18.6 mV.cm-1.Oe-1 to 42.3 mV.cm-1.Oe-1.FCT-Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia—for financial support in the framework of the Strategic Funding UID/FIS/04650/2013 and under project PTDC/EEI-SII/5582/2014. Microbiological characterization of protected designation of origin Serra da Estrela cheese

    Get PDF
Serra da Estrela is the oldest and most recognizable traditional protected designation of origin (PDO) cheese from Portugal. It has been extensively studied over the years, but the latest microbial characterization is 20 years old. Hence, this work aimed to perform an updated characterization of Serra da Estrela PDO cheeses and raw materials. Our analysis showed that lactic acid bacteria content on Serra da Estrela cheeses exceeded 8.8 log CFUsg−1 , in all analyzed samples, with lactococci, lactobacilli and Leuconostoc spp. predominating over enterococci strains. Moreover, lactococci and lactobacilli abundance increased across the production season, while enterococci dropped considerably in late manufactures. Lastly, Leuconostoc spp. content remained unchanged in all analyzed periods. A correspondence analysis showed that L. paracasei, L. lactis, E. durans, E. faecium and L. mesenteroides are transversal in Serra da Estrela cheese manufacturing and were closely associated with milk, curd and cheese matrices. Additionally, L. casei, L. plantarum and L. curvatus were specifically associated with cheese matrices, possibly active during ripening and contributing for the development of these cheeses’ organoleptic characteristics.9814-6B05-9C03 | Ricardo Miguel Pereira Pintoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
